LAMINATED VENEER LUMBER FAQ

What is LVL timber and what is it used for?

Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) is an engineered wood product manufactured by bonding multiple thin wood veneers together under heat and pressure with moisture-resistant adhesives. Unlike plywood, all veneer grains in LVL run in the same direction, providing high strength and stiffness along the beam. It is widely used in residential and commercial construction for structural applications such as floor joists, roof rafters, lintels, door/window headers, and load-bearing beams.

How far can an LVL beam span without support?

LVL beams can span up to 30 feet (9+ meters) or more in residential construction without intermediate support columns, depending on the beam depth, thickness, and total load (dead load, live load, and roof/floor contributions).

Are LVL beams termite resistant?

Because standard untreated LVL is made of natural wood fibers, it is vulnerable to termite damage. To prevent this, manufacturers produce H2 treated LVL, which is infused with termiticides to protect against termites and wood borers in interior framing. H2 treated beams are typically dyed blue or red for easy identification on the job site.

Is LVL timber waterproof and suitable for outdoor use?

Standard untreated LVL is not waterproof and should only be used in dry, covered interior environments. While its adhesives can withstand short-term moisture during framing, extended exposure to rain or humidity can lead to wood swelling, layer delamination, and severe loss of structural strength.
